How to Add a Photo to a Video on iPhone with SubMagic

Inserting a photo to a video on an iPhone is easy. Especially when you use SubMagic as your video editing tool.

‍

Let’s look at the process step by step.

‍

1- Take a Photo and Record Your Video

‍

To overlay a photo to a video, you will need both a photo and a video recording. You can choose a photo from your iPhone’s photo gallery. Or, if you don’t want to use an image from your photo gallery (does anyone else have a million pictures of their cat? Or just me?), you can pick a photo from another source, like free stock photos. You can also use Lenso.ai image search to find photos online. Lenso is an all-in-one reverse image search tool that allows you to find people, places, duplicates, related or similar images. With its advanced features, such as face recognition and free place finder, looking for pictures online is a breeze!

‍

Be sure to record your video, too. Remember, you don’t need to record a video if you don’t want to. You can use clips from other sources. Just make sure you have the appropriate permissions before using someone else’s work.

‍

2-  Open SubMagic in Safari

‍

SubMagic is a web-based video editor. And it is one of the best (and easiest!) video editing apps to use in Safari. 😉

‍

To start editing your video, open Safari on your iPhone.

‍

Then, type “SubMagic” in the search bar or enter the URL. For this example, I’ll type “www.submagic.co” into the URL.

‍

‍

3- Log in to SubMagic or Create an Account

‍

If you do not yet have an account on SubMagic, now’s the time to sign up for free. Tap the “Try for free” button and follow the instructions to create your account.

‍

If you already have an account with SubMagic, click the hamburger icon (the three horizontal lines) and tap “Login.”

‍

4- Create a New Project

‍

Next, click the “Create” button to start your project and upload a new video. For this tutorial, I’ll start a new project. But, if you already have an account and want to use an existing video in your projects, select the video you want to edit.

‍

5- Upload Your Videos

‍

Now, it’s time to upload your video. Tap on the box that says, “Click or Drag/Drop to Upload one or multiple videos at a time.”

‍

Then, choose “Photo Library.” (If your videos are hanging out in the files on your phone, tap “Choose files” and follow the same steps as below.) Alternatively, you can also record a video for your project during this step. Tap “Take video” to record your video now.

‍

Choose your video and then select “Add.”

‍

Next, rename your project and tap “Upload” to upload your video to SubMagic.

‍

Depending on the size of your video file and the speed of your Internet connection, this may take a minute. SubMagic will automatically generate captions during the upload process, too. How cool is that?

‍

6- Tap on “B-Rolls”

To add a photo to a video on iPhone, tap “B-rolls.”

‍

‍

7- Tap “Magic B-Rolls”

‍

Did you know the magic part about SubMagic is its AI capabilities? Using the power of AI, you can quickly add an image to a video by tapping “Magic B-Rolls.”

‍

Then, let SubMagic do its AI thing and insert photos, gifs, and transitions for you. Super simple!

‍

Play the video through to see if you like the flow of the video. If you like the masterpiece, skip on to Step 8.

7a- Manually Add a photo to a video

‍

Let’s say you want to add a different picture to your video, either from the stock image gallery or your photo gallery. To insert a photo to a video on iPhone, scroll through video segments until you find where you want to insert a picture.

‍

For this example, I’m introducing my cat, Phil, to my audience. Directly after saying his name, I want to insert a photo of my cat.

‍

To overlay a photo to a video, click on the photo icon. (It’s right next to the timestamp!)

‍

Then, tap “Image.”

‍

Next, tap on the image box.

‍

Here, you have a few options. You can search the free or premium image galleries for a photo you like.

‍

To upload your own photo, tap “My images.”

‍

Then, tap “Click to upload image.”

‍

Choose “Photo library.” Or you can take a photo or select your image from the files on your phone.

‍

Choose your photo, and then tap “Options”.

‍

Then, resize your image. Full-size photos are too large a file for your video, so select a different file size. I found choosing “medium” works best, but play around with the file size until you see one that works for your project, and then select “done.”

‍

Tap on the photo and make sure it has an orange border around it. Then, scroll down on the page and tap “Apply.”

‍

If you like, you can resize and reposition the photo. Then, tap “Apply.”

‍

Now, you have a photo overlay in your video!

8- Finish Editing Your Video

‍

With your photo inserted into your video, now it’s time to use the rest of SubMagic’s excellent video editing capabilities and edit the rest.

‍

With SubMagic, you can edit your video to include other features like:

‍

  • cool B-roll video
  • Auto-zoom to highlight an essential part of your video
  • Transitions to smooth out your video
  • Auto-cut the silent parts of your video
  • And more!

‍

Spend some time playing around in the editor to put the finishing touches on your content. (Need help adding sound or music? Check out this guide to add music to your video. 🧡)

‍

9- Export Your Video

Once you’re happy with your edited video, it’s time to export your video. Tap the “Export” button at the top right corner of your screen.

‍

‍

It’ll take a few seconds for your video to download. If you need to sit your phone down and come back later, you can! SubMagic will send you an email when your video is ready.

‍

When your video is ready, tap “Download.”

‍

Then, tap “Download” again to save a copy of your video to your phone.  (Side note: if the screen is black, it's okay! Your video is there, promise!)

‍

Now, tap the blue downward arrow in the URL bar.

‍

Then, tap “Downloads.”

‍

Now, tap on your project and then tap on the “Send” icon.

‍

Then, choose “Save Video” to save a copy of your video to your photo gallery.

‍

10- Share Your Video on Your Social Media

Success! Your video is ready to share with your friends and audience on social media. Just go to your favorite platform, upload your content, and hit share!

‍
