Inserting a photo to a video on an iPhone is easy. Especially when you use SubMagic as your video editing tool.
Let’s look at the process step by step.
1- Take a Photo and Record Your Video
To overlay a photo to a video, you will need both a photo and a video recording. You can choose a photo from your iPhone’s photo gallery. Or, if you don’t want to use an image from your photo gallery (does anyone else have a million pictures of their cat? Or just me?), you can pick a photo from another source, like free stock photos. You can also use Lenso.ai image search to find photos online. Lenso is an all-in-one reverse image search tool that allows you to find people, places, duplicates, related or similar images. With its advanced features, such as face recognition and free place finder, looking for pictures online is a breeze!
Be sure to record your video, too. Remember, you don’t need to record a video if you don’t want to. You can use clips from other sources. Just make sure you have the appropriate permissions before using someone else’s work.
2- Open SubMagic in Safari
SubMagic is a web-based video editor. And it is one of the best (and easiest!) video editing apps to use in Safari. 😉
To start editing your video, open Safari on your iPhone.
Then, type “SubMagic” in the search bar or enter the URL. For this example, I’ll type “www.submagic.co” into the URL.
3- Log in to SubMagic or Create an Account
If you do not yet have an account on SubMagic, now’s the time to sign up for free. Tap the “Try for free” button and follow the instructions to create your account.
If you already have an account with SubMagic, click the hamburger icon (the three horizontal lines) and tap “Login.”
4- Create a New Project
Next, click the “Create” button to start your project and upload a new video. For this tutorial, I’ll start a new project. But, if you already have an account and want to use an existing video in your projects, select the video you want to edit.
5- Upload Your Videos
Now, it’s time to upload your video. Tap on the box that says, “Click or Drag/Drop to Upload one or multiple videos at a time.”
Then, choose “Photo Library.” (If your videos are hanging out in the files on your phone, tap “Choose files” and follow the same steps as below.) Alternatively, you can also record a video for your project during this step. Tap “Take video” to record your video now.
Choose your video and then select “Add.”
Next, rename your project and tap “Upload” to upload your video to SubMagic.
Depending on the size of your video file and the speed of your Internet connection, this may take a minute. SubMagic will automatically generate captions during the upload process, too. How cool is that?
6- Tap on “B-Rolls”

Let’s say you want to add a different picture to your video, either from the stock image gallery or your photo gallery. To insert a photo to a video on iPhone, scroll through video segments until you find where you want to insert a picture.
For this example, I’m introducing my cat, Phil, to my audience. Directly after saying his name, I want to insert a photo of my cat.
To overlay a photo to a video, click on the photo icon. (It’s right next to the timestamp!)
Then, tap “Image.”
Next, tap on the image box.
Here, you have a few options. You can search the free or premium image galleries for a photo you like.
To upload your own photo, tap “My images.”
Then, tap “Click to upload image.”
Choose “Photo library.” Or you can take a photo or select your image from the files on your phone.
Choose your photo, and then tap “Options”.
Then, resize your image. Full-size photos are too large a file for your video, so select a different file size. I found choosing “medium” works best, but play around with the file size until you see one that works for your project, and then select “done.”
Tap on the photo and make sure it has an orange border around it. Then, scroll down on the page and tap “Apply.”
If you like, you can resize and reposition the photo. Then, tap “Apply.”
Now, you have a photo overlay in your video!
8- Finish Editing Your Video
With your photo inserted into your video, now it’s time to use the rest of SubMagic’s excellent video editing capabilities and edit the rest.

When your video is ready, tap “Download.”
