How to Add Text to Adobe Premiere

Tutorials

Texts are powerful elements in videos and one of the most essential tools in a video editor’s toolbelt.

‍

As a video editor, every scene in your video counts, which means you need to invest in your video’s quality to keep viewers hooked and engaged.

‍

Adding text to videos not only enhances the quality of your video content but also increases its watch time.

‍

In this article, we’ll show you how to add text to videos in Adobe Premiere so you can elevate the quality of your videos.

‍

Let’s dive in.

‍

Why Add Text in Adobe Premiere Pro?

There are so many reasons why you need to add text to videos you create. Text helps to convey information quickly to your audience. For instance, texts make tutorial videos easy to understand and give more details about what is being spoken.

‍

You can use text to provide subtitles for the characters' conversations, title screens, or credits. The text you use depends on the purpose of your video. A filmmaker, for instance, will only focus on subtitles and opening titles or credits.

‍

For videos posted on social media, there’ll be a greater focus on subtitles and captions. 85% of Facebook users watch videos on mute, and 69% of people view videos in public places with no sound.

‍

The text style in these scenarios tends to be flashy, with animated text to draw people in.

‍

How To Add Text in Premiere Pro in 4 Steps

Here’s how to add text to your videos and edit them in Adobe Premiere for your videos. You can edit the font, color, size, and animation inside your Adobe Premiere project.

‍

Step 1. Open Premiere Pro To Start a New Project

Launch Premiere Pro on Windows or Mac. Click File at the top > New > Project. Give your project a title, and then click OK. Double-click on the left-corner library to import media. Next, drag your desired video file to the Premiere Pro timeline.

‍

Step 2: Add Text

Go to the topmost toolbar and select Titles, select New Title > Default Still when a drop-down menu appears. You can use Ctrl + T as a shortcut key. The new title window on your screen contains details about the width, timebase, height, and aspect ratio of the video. Enter the name of your project, then click OK.

‍

Step 3: Customize Your Text

Open the Essential Graphics panel. Modify your text by highlighting it and then changing the shape, size, and color.

‍

Step 4: Add a Custom Font

Choose Add Adobe Fonts in the drop-down menu to add custom fonts not included in the program. Activate the fonts you want to use for the video. Once done, you’ll see them in the font options when you’re editing.

‍

How To Add Captions and Subtitles with Adobe Premiere Pro

‍Adding captions or subtitles is a slightly different process on Adobe Premiere Pro. To start, go to File, then click New and Captions.

‍

Here are the next steps to adding captions or subtitles to Adobe Premiere videos:

  1. Navigate to the Captions tab.
  2. Next, click Sequence and then Captions. Click Add New Caption Track.
  3. Choose an option from the four that will be displayed to choose how you want to add the subtitles or captions.
  4. Next, you will see a Blank Captions Layer on top of your timeline.

‍

Here’s how to use the Captions Panel to modify the captions you add:

  1. To add the first caption, click the + button in the Captions panel.
  2. Type the caption in the text box.
  3. You will see a colored block in the timeline indicating the caption.
  4. Drag the box along the timeline to adjust the caption’s timing. You can extend or shorten the length.
  5. Click the + button once you finish to add another caption. Be careful not to overwrite captions by moving the playhead along the timeline.
